Cardinals

I never knew they were special birds—one of a kind that can catch your attention anywhere.

It was the fall of 2021 when I got my first glimpse of this bright red bird. It stood out among the vibrant colors of the season, glowing quietly, perched on a tree. It was a rough season in my life—I had lost my job and didn’t exactly know where I was headed. The only comforting thing was a long walk by the stream that ran behind my apartment complex.

It’s amazing what a little splash of red flying across the sky can stir up in your heart, bringing joy in one of the lowest valleys of your life. I soon started chasing one of them to find out where they lived along the stream and would wait for them to show up during my walks.

Soon, winter arrived. As the snow settled in, I stayed indoors but continued wondering about my bright feathered friends—how they were surviving the winter. One morning, during my quiet time with the Creator, I sat in my recliner with the dull winter sunlight streaming through the patio door and told Him how much I missed seeing my little friends. A part of me wanted to bundle up in all my thick winter jackets, risk slipping on the icy path, and just say hello to my red-feathered companions.

As I continued reading, I had this strange sense that I was being watched, and I heard in my spirit: “Look up.”
“Where, Lord?” I wondered. “The ceiling?”

Just then, I saw, among the white snow-covered trees, a speck of red.
There he was—staring right at me.
God brought the cardinal to me, right where I was.

The Northern Cardinal, with its bright red plumage, is often associated with joy, hope, and remembrance. There seems to be a symbolic connection between the cardinal and angels, and some even believe it’s a sign of love, comfort, or remembrance from loved ones who have passed away. This symbolism is often seen in products like sympathy gifts and ornaments.

While not directly related to biblical archangels like Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the idea of “cardinal angels” is a popular belief in many cultures. No wonder it’s a favorite mascot in U.S. high schools—many believe it signifies good luck, hope, rebirth, loyalty, or spiritual messengers.

For me personally, it is a reminder of God’s presence and nearness in the everyday, especially when I get overwhelmed by mundane life. Amongst all the colors that surround us, the bright red of the cardinal shooting across the sky is unmissable.

When thoughts of yesterdays and tomorrows cloud my mind, seeing a cardinal reminds me of the tangible presence of God through His creation for today! The red and black remind me of the blood of Christ that redeemed me from the darkness I was destined for, into an eternal life of victory.

It reminds me that even among the distractions of the world, He is the highlight of my life.
When I have Him, I have everything else—joy, hope, love, victory, and freedom.

I have a good friend who once sent me a close-up photo of a cardinal at her bird feeder, captured on a live camera her son had gifted her for Mother’s Day. I didn’t even know such a thing existed! And here I am chasing cardinals along streams and trees. Well, it’s on my bucket list now!

Ironically, when I visited her home for the first time, guess who showed up in her garden?
“I love cardinals!” I blurted out.
Now she says every time she sees a cardinal, she can’t help but think of me. 😊

I’ve always wished I could gaze at these red beauties for longer periods, but they seem to dart away across the skies, hardly staying for a few seconds.

Yesterday was a tumultuous day for me—I was waiting for a crucial decision at work. I was fasting and praying, and to ease my mind from worrying about the response from my boss, I drove to a beautiful lake for some quiet time with God.

As I was praying, reading the Bible, and talking to God, I asked, “Show me something beautiful, Lord.”

I was in my car, windows rolled down, and within a few seconds, a small red cardinal landed on a tree bark just three feet away from me.

My heart leapt!
Of all the beautiful things He could have shown me, God knew my favorite.

It stayed with me for a full 10–12 minutes, pecking at things, not even minding the squirrel scooting by. The female cardinal, who came by to give him company for a few minutes, was no match for her bright red counterpart, though she was elegant in her own unique gray dress with hints of red.

I’m sure my little red friend was totally aware that a big fan was soaking in his gorgeous beauty as he proudly showed off his vibrant red feathers with a touch of gray, his shiny black eyes, and the little crown he wore like royalty.

We even had an eye-to-eye connection for a few eternal seconds. It seemed like he was in no hurry to leave. Almost as if he was asked to spend some time with June.

I even managed to take a selfie with my little cardinal friend and filmed him on video for a full two minutes. He didn’t mind at all.

I loved every minute of it, thanking God for creating this red beauty—perhaps just for me, for this very day.

Seeing  the cardinal  yesterday reminded me that God listens to our heartfelt prayers. He wants us to know that even in the midst of turmoil, He is beside us—comforting us, bringing beauty from ashes.

Yesterday may not have turned out as I had hoped, but I know this:
If He could listen to a simple, spontaneous request and send a cardinal to brighten my day, He has also heard my so-called “bigger” prayers.

He has dispatched angels on my behalf.
They are in flight and will arrive at the right moment.

I will wait on the Lord.
My future is in His hands.
My life is in His hands.

Hope sometimes shows up as red.
At least in my life, it does!
