Five Lessons from the Birds in My Backyard

*An Unexpected Revelation about Feeding on God’s Word*

I was thrilled to see a new visitor at my bird feeder this morning!

At first glance, I thought it was just another sparrow. But a closer look revealed a rather cute little bird with gray wings, a splash of peach-orange underneath, and what looked like a tiny crown on its head!

What caught my attention, however, was its peculiar feeding habit.

This little fellow flew to the feeder, picked up just **ONE seed**, and flew away!

That’s it? Just one seed?

A few seconds later, he was back. Picked up another seed and disappeared again!

Unlike the other birds that settle down for a hearty meal, this fellow seemed perfectly content taking one seed at a time.

Curiosity got the better of me, and I Googled it. Turns out, my little visitor was a “Tufted Titmouse” These birds often carry a single seed to a nearby branch,

crack it open and eat it, or hide it away for later.

And suddenly, I remembered another visitor from the day before.

A blue jay!

Now, this fellow was a completely different character!

As I was filling the bird feeder, he was calling out so loudly from the trees that I could almost hear him yelling, “Hey! I’m hungry! What’s taking you so long?”

Remember those childhood days when Mom was getting dinner ready and you sat impatiently at the table, calling out, “Mom! I’m hungry! Where’s the food?”

Well, this blue jay reminded me of exactly that!

I wondered whether he was actually demanding food. Later, I learned that blue jays can be quite vocal around food sources.

And then, suddenly, the dots connected!

**The Holy Spirit dropped a beautiful revelation into my heart.**

The different feeding habits of the birds in my backyard reminded me of the different ways we Christians feed on the Word of God!

### The Tufted Titmouse — One Seed at a Time!

That little tufted titmouse became a beautiful picture of meditating on God’s Word.

One seed. One verse.

He takes it away, perches on a tree, cracks it open, and feeds on it before returning for more.

Isn’t that how we ought to meditate on Scripture?

Take a verse, carry it in our hearts, ponder over it, chew on it, and return for more!

Jeremiah 15:16 says:

*”Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.”*

It’s not always how many verses we read, but how deeply we allow God’s Word to sink into our hearts.

### The Sparrows — Sunday Morning Fellowship!

Then comes the bunch of sparrows!

They arrive together, settle down on different feeders, pick through their favorite seeds, and fly away together!

Doesn’t that remind you of our Sunday morning gatherings at church, where we listen to the sermon, each take away a portion of the Word, and head home?

Fellowship with believers is a wonderful way to grow together as one body in Christ. But our spiritual nourishment shouldn’t end when the Sunday service does!

### The Mourning Doves — Living on Leftovers!

Now, here comes another interesting group of visitors.

The mourning doves!

I’ve noticed that these gentle birds don’t usually perch on my swinging bird feeders. Instead, they prefer the ground.

You see, the sparrows are rather messy eaters. They rummage through the seeds, picking out their favorites and tossing the rest onto the ground.

And guess who comes along to enjoy the leftovers?

The mourning doves!

They stroll around leisurely, picking up the fallen seeds, taking their own sweet time. No hurry. No fuss.

And that got me thinking.

Aren’t there Christians who feed almost entirely on somebody else’s meditation of the Word?

A forwarded WhatsApp message, a beautiful scripture poster on Facebook, an inspirational Instagram post, or a devotional thought someone else has written.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with these! In fact, I write devotionals and share scriptures myself!

But **are we feeding directly on God’s Word, or are we surviving on what somebody else has gathered, chewed, and shared?**

### The Goldfinches — Straight to the Source!

And then there are my beautiful yellow goldfinches!

When sunflowers were blooming in my backyard, I noticed something fascinating.

While the other birds flocked to the feeders filled with sunflower seeds, these little yellow beauties often bypassed the feeders altogether!

Instead, they flew straight to the sunflowers, perched on the flower heads, and began digging out the seeds themselves.

They would sit there for what seemed like hours, patiently pulling out the seeds, removing the husks, and enjoying the goodness hidden inside.

**They went straight to the source!**

We can listen to sermons from famous pastors, prophetic messages, and Bible teachings. These can certainly encourage and strengthen our faith.

But nothing compares to opening the Scriptures ourselves, sitting in God’s presence, and allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal His Word to our hearts.

God knows our circumstances. He knows exactly what we need for each day.

Sometimes, a familiar Scripture suddenly comes alive, speaking directly into our situation—a fresh *rhema* word, like manna from heaven!

Just like those goldfinches, we need to dig deeper to discover the treasures hidden within God’s Word.

### The Blue Jay — Mom! I’m Hungry!

And that brings me back to my impatient blue jay!

Of all the birds visiting my backyard, this fellow had no hesitation in announcing his hunger. Loudly!

Oh, how I wish we Christians had that kind of appetite for God’s Word!

1 Peter 2:2 says:

*”As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.”*

But we cannot remain spiritual infants forever!

Hebrews 5:12–14 reminds us that while milk is for the spiritually immature, solid food belongs to those who have grown in maturity and learned to discern good from evil.

**We must grow from milk to meat!**

### God’s Love Letter to Us

Have you ever received a love letter from someone very dear to you?

Remember how precious those words were?

You read it, reread it, pondered over certain sentences, and tried to understand the heart of the one who wrote them.

Well, that’s exactly how I see the Bible.

**It’s God’s love letter to humankind!**

John 1:1 says:

*”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”*

Jesus is the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). He came to reveal the Father, in whose image we were created.

**How can we become more like our heavenly Father if we don’t even know what our Father is like?**

The Word of God is living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). It searches our hearts, convicts us, corrects us, and transforms us.

And sometimes, a verse we’ve read a hundred times reveals something we never noticed before!

The words haven’t changed. But our understanding has deepened.

Five Birds. Five Lessons.

So, what have these feathered visitors taught me?

1. **Be hungry like the blue jay!** Develop an appetite for God’s Word and grow from spiritual milk to solid food.

2. **Meditate like the tufted titmouse!** Take even a single verse, ponder over it, and allow it to nourish your soul.

3. **Fellowship like the sparrows!** Enjoy the Word with fellow believers and grow together as one body in Christ.

4. **Don’t settle for leftovers like the mourning doves!** Let sermons, devotionals, and social media posts supplement, not replace, your personal study of Scripture.

5. **Go straight to the Source like the goldfinches!** Dig into the Scriptures yourself and allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate God’s Word for your life.

Perhaps we’ve all been each of these birds at different seasons of our lives.

But whatever bird we resemble today, may we learn to treasure God’s Word as Job did:

“I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” — Job 23:12

After all, the greatest treasure isn’t merely what we discover in His Word, but the One we come to know through it.
